About Allegheny County Parks

Allegheny County Parks is a public park system spanning over 12,000 acres in and around Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Established in 1927, it consists of nine major parks that provide residents and visitors with opportunities for hiking, biking, picnicking, fishing, and nature observation close to the urban environment of Pittsburgh. The parks encompass a variety of geographic features including rolling hills, river valleys, woodlands, meadows, and wetlands, reflecting the diverse ecology of southwestern Pennsylvania. The system includes what was formerly known as Allegheny Commons and larger parks such as North Park, South Park, and Hartwood Acres, each offering unique landscapes and facilities. Historic landmarks such as Hartwood Acres Mansion and the Roundhouse offer cultural experiences alongside natural exploration. The extensive trail networks traverse mixed hardwood forests and riparian corridors, creating habitat for white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, migratory birds, and other regional wildlife. Fishing opportunities abound in reservoirs and streams, while winter offers snow sports in some parks. Allegheny County Parks are valued for blending outdoor recreation and natural preservation within an accessible metropolitan region. Visitors can enjoy scenic drives, photography, organized events, and varied terrain suitable for all ages and skill levels.
